UAE Green Visa: Eligibility, Requirements & How It Differs from the Golden Visa

Answer Capsule: The UAE Green Visa is a 5-year residence permit you sponsor yourself — no employer or national sponsor needed. It is open to skilled employees earning at least AED 15,000 a month with a bachelor's degree, to freelancers and self-employed professionals, and to investors and partners. Holders can sponsor their spouse, children and parents. It is separate from the 10-year Golden Visa.

Introduced as part of the UAE's 2022 visa reforms, the Green Visa filled the gap between an employer-tied work visa and the elite 10-year Golden Visa. It gives skilled professionals, freelancers and investors a 5-year, self-sponsored residency — meaning you are no longer dependent on an employer to stay in the country. Here is who qualifies in 2026, what it unlocks, and how it compares to the Golden Visa.

What Is the Green Visa?

The Green Visa is a five-year UAE residence permit that the holder sponsors themselves. Unlike a standard employment visa, it is not tied to an employer or a UAE national sponsor, so you can change jobs — or have no single employer at all — without losing your residency.

Who Qualifies? The Three Routes

RouteKey requirements
Skilled employeeA valid employment contract, a job classified in MOHRE skill levels 1–3, a minimum bachelor's degree, and a salary of at least AED 15,000 per month
Freelancer / self-employedA freelance or self-employment permit from MOHRE, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and proof of annual income from self-employment of at least AED 360,000 over the previous two years (or proof of financial solvency)
Investor / partnerAn investment in a licensed commercial activity meeting the value approved by the competent authorities

The skilled-employee route is the most common. The key figure to remember is the AED 15,000 monthly salary combined with a bachelor's-level role.

What the Green Visa Gives You

  • 5 years of self-sponsored residency — renewable, and not dependent on an employer.
  • Sponsor your family — spouse and children, and parents under certain conditions.
  • Sponsor sons up to age 25 (versus 18 on standard visas).
  • A 6-month grace period to remain in the country after the visa expires or is cancelled — longer than the standard window.
  • Freedom to change jobs without restarting your residency, because you sponsor yourself.

Green Visa vs Golden Visa

Both are self-sponsored, but they sit at different tiers. (For the full Golden Visa breakdown, see our Golden Visa UAE 2026 guide.)

In short: the Green Visa is the mid-tier, accessible self-sponsored option; the Golden Visa is the longer, higher-threshold one.

How to Apply

Applications are processed through ICP (and GDRFA / Amer in Dubai). You will generally need your passport, photo, attested degree certificate, your employment contract / freelance permit / proof of income (depending on route), a medical fitness test, and biometrics. The flow is the standard one: entry permit → medical and biometrics → residency stamp and Emirates ID. Processing typically takes a couple of weeks once your documents are accepted.

ZETUP's Green Visa Support

ZETUP assesses which route fits you, prepares and attests your documentation, submits to ICP/GDRFA, and arranges the medical and Emirates ID steps — so a self-sponsored visa doesn't turn into a paperwork project.
